Compaq StorageWorks RAID Array
8000 Fibre Channel Solution
Highlights
Fibre Channel storage solution with industry-leading Storage Area Network (SAN) support
RAID and JBOD storage with capacities from 24 drives (434 GB) to 72 drives (1.3 TB) in a single
subsystem -- Use multiple RA8000 subsystems for unbounded capacity
Multivendor platform support for the most popular Intel and UNIX platforms
Description
The Compaq StorageWorks RAID Array 8000 Fibre Channel (RA8000 FC) Solution is designed to provide
a storage solution that can span a broad range of needs, providing an affordable entry price with scalable
capacity, built-in and optional features for multivendor operating environments, high-availability
requirements, and the most demanding performance requirements. The RA8000 FC is a milestone in a
tradition of outstanding products in an industry where the name StorageWorks has become synonymous
with mission-critical requirements. It represents a major step in Compaq’s Enterprise Network Storage
Architecture (ENSA) vision.
Compaq products using Fibre Channel Arbitrated Loop (FC-AL) host interconnect provide benefits in
distance, connectivity, and performance. The RA8000 supports a standard of 500 meters for each FC
segment. Over 120 nodes can participate in a Fibre Channel loop, and each loop has a rated speed of 100
MB/s. At a later date Compaq will announce Fibre Channel fabric support, using switches that will further
extend Compaq’s support of SAN technology.
The RA8000 storage controller is the Compaq HSG80 running Array Controller Software (ACS) V8.3. The
HSG80 is the latest in a line of StorageWorks controllers. The ACS software is designed to support multiple
platforms providing features that include: dual-controller operation, controller failover, mirrored write-back
cache, read-ahead cache, RAID implementation, disk mirroring, and disk partitioning capabilities. In
addition, ACS manages host interconnect and protocol services to provide data for event notification and
status as displayed by the StorageWorks Command Console (SWCC).
The RA8000 FC includes two Fibre Channel host ports on each storage controller providing up 200 MB/s
of available bandwidth. Disk drives are connected through six UltraSCSI (40 MB/s) channels. The RA8000
FC enclosure provides capacity for 24 disks in StorageWorks building blocks (SBB). Expansion is provided
for up to 72 drives when using two additional expansion enclosures. With 18 GB UltraSCSI wide disks, the
RA8000 FC system provides disk capacity from 432 GB to 1.3 TB. Servers can use multiple host bus
adapters (HBAs) to multiple RA8000 FC systems for unlimited storage capacity.
The RA8000 FC is supplied in two basic building blocks, a pedestal style cabinet and a rackable model.
The pedestal is a self-contained desk-height cabinet, offered in DIGITAL Classic top gun blue color and in
the Compaq opal color. The rackable model is shipped ready to be mounted in a 19-inch Compaq rack or a
19-inch cabinet/rack using an included universal RETMA/metric mounting kit.
The RA8000 FC solutions incorporate the latest in RAID technology providing RAID levels 0, 1, 0+1,
adaptive 3/5, and non-RAID disks. Compaq’s implementation of RAID capability assures that data
availability will be maintained despite hardware failure. Features such as read-ahead cache and mirrored
write-back cache improve or minimize the affect on performance while preserving data availability and
supporting high availability.
RA8000 FC controllers include 64 MB of cache. Cache options allow for 128 MB, 256 MB, and 512 MB
of cache in each controller. The value of additional cache is dependent on the characteristics of applications
being run on the server(s). Many applications derive maximum benefit from additional cache on the server
and others benefit from storage controller cache.
The RA8000 FC pedestals and rackables come in both single-controller and in dual-controller models to
allow users the ability to select the level of high availability required for their applications. Dual-controller
